I am usually not a fan of this kind of ending but when it is done well it's rather compelling! (and this was done well <3)
I thought Erik's terror was palpable and I loved the tense situation with the others, you did such a good job pacing and building the mood in this!
I do have a question though - what was blocking Charles from accessing Erik's mind? Was it that he was underground? Was it that Erik was descending into madness? The distance? I mean there was no metal in the coffin that would shield it like the helmet so I was confused by that part. (I know it's a trivial part in lieu of the ending but it stuck with me).
I am one of those weird people where I like the ambiguity of this in that... he is both Alive and Dead like the cat so to speak. And if they pull a body out of the coffin and it is still breathing - does that mean it's alive? If his mind has left does that count as him living? That is fascinating to me and part of me thinks it would have been kinder for him to be dead here than having a brain damaged body and mind to exist in.
