I've been on the other side of an open ended conclusion and yeah, sometimes it makes you want to scream. XD

To address your question about Charles: first it was definitely distance that blocked him and then it was making the assumption for looking for minds above ground. I feel those two factors, along with Charles' increasing panic and franticness, would lead the connection between minds to be tenuous. And well, near the end, Erik is passing out, so the connection would weaken even further. (I'll let you muse whether the writing within the brackets was Erik's mind or Charles. ;P)

And there's nothing weird about enjoying ambiguity! I wrote it! :D If we delve into that question deeper, I would say breathing w/o brain (no memories, emotions, etc.) would be a form of death. Technically alive but dead in all the ways that matter. A person becomes a body when they don't have life inside them.
