So, fandom has been flailing due to this shitty LJ redesign - which makes as much sense as Starfire's new look in the reboot, IMHO - but apparently, there is more.

THIS links to a few MILLION possible changes LJ is thinking of implementing. It looks like everything is getting uglier and posting will be a greater pain in the ass than it already is. If this ends up happening, DW seems like a good place to jump ship.

... and all my brother is doing is constantly showing me pics from a Tumblr blog "Kim Jong Il looking at things" whilst laughing hysterically. Apparently there is also a Facebook page, dear God.

2011 was not a good year for dictators, man.

SERIOUSLY

I was waiting for a train my bus, and I saw a man kick a bird. He got it, too. I mean, WHAT THE FUCK. Who kicks birds? If you don't want it near you, gently shoo it away with your hands, or something, don't fucking kick it. It was an ibis, which yeah, are annoying pests like crows, but are essentially harmless overall. It wasn't even doing anything to deserve a kick, like pecking or attacking - it was walking around innocently.

Ugh. Faith in humanity slightly diminished.

I was just thinking, what would aliens think if they ever happened to listen to the English language?

Because I say "shit" and "crap" a lot, you know, when I screw something up (drop something, trip, burn myself or spill something, etc.). I also say "what the fuck" quite a bit. My part of Australia is pretty relaxed about swear words - to be fair, I live in a pretty bogan area - but would aliens know about that? If they only had a limited time to study what is admittedly a very complicated, convoluted language, would they be able to realise the context?

Or would they think humans have a very strange and constant fascination with bodily discharge and reproduction/coupling? "Shit, mate, that's the fucking balls!" is one such example of how colloquial English could confuse any eavesdropping extraterrestrial beings. "Holy shit" or "Holy crap" may even make them think we worship it.

I would image that the report would read something like, "Humans seem very comfortable with mentioning excrement in the middle of conversations or even moments of heightened pleasure / high-energy (i.e. sex, fighting) without prompt or explanation." And if they run a scan to double check, they might come across scat, watersports, etc.

In short: I really hope if we're visited by aliens they can understand sarcasm/tones/context of language. Also, that they don't invade and enslave humanity.

The last few months since my last post ... have been difficult, to say the least. I don't really want to talk about the stuff that happened, because I'm trying to focus on the good things. So, a list, in no particular order, of the good things that happened in the last two weeks:
  1. Passed all my university exams with flying colours - I AM FREE NOW, THANK GOD
  2. No longer suicidal or actively depressed
  3. My autistic brother hugged me and said he was proud of me (which he has never done before in my entire life, I nearly started sobbing)
  4. Tomorrow I'm flying out to Sydney for a quick holiday and to see the Harry Potter museum exhibit
  5. I've finished an original fiction novella at 20k
  6. I'm 10k into a meta BNF!AU fanfiction for the Avengers
  7. Was given American Gods as a gift, bought Unwind and Inheritance, so I've got some lovely (re)reading material for the holidays
As seen in point 6, I've starting writing fanfiction again. I had been writing more original fiction during the accidental hiatus because it was a coping mechanism for the most part. Strangely enough, I think writing that story helped me more than my friends or family, which sounds horrible, but is true.

Anyway, in the works is more of that model!AU for XM:FC, the fic described in point 6, and maybe some Sherlock if I feel up to it. I wanted to sign up for a Big Bang, but I don't think I'm quite ready to jump right back in like that.
