Final Rating: 6.5 out of 10.
Quick Summary: Despicable Me is a movie revolving around an evil genius who is somehow cornered into looking after three orphan children in his quest for being the world's greatest villian by attempting to steal the moon. This is also a story about how the children slowly become more important than world domination.
First off, this movie was entertaining in that fluffy, childish way. It was something to watch and leave the theatres with a smile on your face. A movie to warm the cockles of your heart and had segments that made you laugh at the sheer ridiculousness.
The characters were interesting and odd in that way only movie characters could be. The main character, Gru, had a fantastic accent, Russian, I'd place it as. It was entertaining to watch his cold, cold heart being thawed out by three awkwardly amazing orphans.
Don't get me started on his arch nemisis Victor (a.k.a. "Vector"). So wrong, yet so funny.
However, it overall lacked a real plot, and there were bits that simply were not concevable. The iconic yellow "minions" you see in advertisements, while utterly adorable, were not cohesive to the plot other than cute/humorous inserts. While the animation was flawless, the 3D effects were sorely lacking. Movies like this seem to me to go, 'Let's just make it available in 3D for the hell of it!'
I did like the sheer fluff. Some moments were positively drenched with unbelievable fluffiness and pretty cracky, exaggerated humour. It was something that didn't need you to think, didn't make you overly confused, and even the angst was brief and quickly resolved.
All in all, it was a brilliant kids' movie. Just don't expect a mind-blowing experience.
