tellytubby101: (Fantasy vs. Reality)

Final Rating: 8 out of 10.

Quick Summary: Sometimes you see things in the corner of your eye. Something ... not quite right. But you brush it off and live your life just not knowing. Clary Fray no longer has that luxury. The world is full of monsters - one she can finally see. Ones she has to kill.

[Individual book titles: City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass].

Today I just got Clockwork Angel, first book in the Infernal Devices, the "sister-series" to the Mortal Instruments, and since I knew I'd review that book once I'm done reading it, I just have to get the original series out of the way.

One of my favourite things about these books is the complexity of it all. Very beautifully done, to the point it feels real. Like the world has sucked you into it. The Mortal Instruments universe has depth; rules and regulations bind all the demons, the warlocks and even the "Shadowhunters" -  a band of gifted humans that are to hunt down the monsters.

Through the eyes of a young teenage girl, the author, Cassandra Clare, has worked to show us something amazing. An underground network of werewolves and vampires; not the prissy ones that sparkle, serious creatures of darkness that still seem like they have a life of their own. She makes faeries seem badass.

Her prose paints a picture dripping with emotion and startling clarity. She does wonders with twisting the plot, making the unexpected a total, believable, yet breathtaking reality. There is a great amount of detail and study gone into this, you can see it pretty well. Some of the mythical creatures remain true to their legends, perhaps a change here or there for artistic value.

Clare is not afraid to get her characters dirty, and they see action as they fight monsters - poor Clary dragged into the midst of this huge underworld battle, not forgetting her completely innocent friend, Simon, pulling him along for the ride. There are parts humour, parts friendship, parts action, parts angst and even quite a bit of romance.

Characterization is something she builds up as the series continue. The character development, I think, is well done, especially considering all the characters that play a major role in the story. Throughout my readings of the series, I've found myself earnestly irritated, amused or somehow moved emotionally by the people - whom I have to keep reminding myself are not real except in ink and paper.

At the very least, read book one. The shocker at the end of it will rip your heart out of your chest. From there, I have full faith you won't be able to put the series down.
