Final Rating: 3.5 out of 10.

Quick Summary: Based off the book of the same name by C.S. Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader promises mystery, adventure and a path of magic and self-discovery.

Not happy. Not happy at all. I can't believe I paid to see this movie. Grr.

I am pissed. Now, imagine this. One of your all time favourite books ever is turned into a movie. You've seen the trailers, and you've got high hopes they didn't fuck it up. But you're realistic, too. You know things will be changed. But that's okay, as long as they do it justice.

They didn't do it justice. I wasn't the only one in the theatre to think this either, if the yawning was anything to go by. Yes, yawning. Even before the credits started rolling, people walked out, as if they couldn't wait another moment for freedom. That is not a reaction a movie should get.

The basic premise of the book, which I am paraphrasing to be short, was: find the seven lords and Aslan's Country.
What happened was: find the seven swords to break the curse on Black Island (or some shit like that).

What. The. Fuck?

Now, I can't see why they rewrote it to be like that. Probably more theatrical, but utterly pointless. The original plot was exciting and wondrous enough.

The entire time I was watching the movie, I was completely irritated beyond belief. It started off really well, then went downhill from there. Admittedly, the casting for one of the newer characters, Eustace, was spot on. He personified perfectly the idea of a whiny, spoiled little brat. Reepicheep's (one of my favourite characters) return was also a bright spot in the gloom.

Except overall I found the performance (of the actors) lacking emotional depth and the changes in plot too much to make me happy. I guess if you've never touched the book, then the adaptation was alright. But I could very easily say the same about the Eragon movie, and fans of the Inheritance Cycleknow what a bloomin' disaster that was.

As for special effects, it swayed. Some parts were really well crafted, and others it looked like they ran out of time to make it. I feel like the movie had sapped a lot of the original book's impact and meaning. Aslan, the great lion-god he is, felt like an unneccessary part of the movie, whereas he was far more important in the book.

There is creative licence and then there is butchering a classic.

I say don't see it at all if you can avoid it. Harrumph.
