(I'm pretty morbid though. I keep thinking that this is celebrating one of the most painful moments in my mum's life.)

I am willing to bet that is not how your mom sees it. Harry said something similar to me about this a few weeks back. ( What 6 1/2 year old thinks about these things? But that is another question).
This is a day your mom waited for with much anticipation, the day she got to meet you face to face. Yes it may have not been the most comfortable day of her life (trust me, I would understand that one) but in the end she got YOU.
That beng said, you could always send her flowers on your birthday.

"And many happy reruns!" That is such a cool phrase. I am now using that on my birthday cards to friends/family. ^_^
